Rugby CAMRA Branch Summer Pub of the Year 2014 Head of Steam, LilbourneBy Tim Dawe
Rugby CAMRA would like to congratulate Richard and Wendy Hoult who are the owners of the Head of Steam, Lilbourne. The pub was their family home purchased in 1919, now converted to a genuine Free House, opened in March 2014 and the winners of the Summer Pub of the Year award in the Rugby CAMRA branch area for 2014.
The pub has great ales to choose from, selling local ales from Dowbridge Brewery, owned by Russell Webb, and rotating guest ales from all types and sizes of breweries around the UK. On the several occasions that local CAMRA members have visited the pub, the quality of the beer has been second to none!
Richard has spent many years in catering working in the pub industry, with his first job at the Bell, Lilbourne in 1982, then on to the George, Kilsby in 1983 following his mentor, Gordon Bedwell who taught him the trade.
From then, Richard went onto running bars for the Licence Victuallers’ Association in Daventry, and in 1986 bars for Whitakers. As you can see from this, Richard and his family have a passion for the trade and it was inevitable that he and his wife were going to own and run their own pub in the village where he grew up.
His main job for 34 years was in the motor industry working for some very popular car industry names.
The Head of Steam is situated in the idyllic village of Lilbourne, just off the A5 outside of Rugby, down Station Road. It’s a great place to visit, friendly, welcoming, relaxing, no obtrusive TV, pleasant background music and of course, great Real Ale!. The pub has a large car park and back garden. It’s great to see a new pub opening in the village many years after the Bell shut its doors for the last time in 1997. Enjoy your visit!
