Newbold Crown Planning Application for Houses

Thursday 18 May 2023

A planning application has been made to build two houses on the site of the Newbold On Avon Crown Inn.

Whilst the plans appear to look good, the proposed works are part of an earlier application that would remove another pub from our community. The submitted plans are for removing the entire NE side of the pub grounds (car park and garden) and turning the area into a building site with a short term loss of all parking. The noise, dust and, when all that has settled, the proximity of these new houses and their private gardens, the Newbold Crown will have lost much of its former appeal.

You may have your own opinions (these here are mine, not CAMRA overall). Please do express your opinion to the Council as this precident will have dire consequences for so many locations where a tied pub is used to make a quick profit for the brewery and a massive loss for our pubs.

There are only a few days left to make your views known to the planners so please don't delay.

**** UPDATE 17 May ****

On 17 May the plans were revised. Please view the planning portal (the link above is still valid) and see the changes. Please also submit comments on the new proposal, even if they are the same as before. It does make a difference!

**** UPDATE Sept 2023 ****

It looks like we won a small victory as the plan was rejected. We believe they will edit it and reapply for one house instead of two or something similar. Watch this space - or better still go to the Rugby Council planning portal and register your objections (or not) directly there as and when plans are submitted.

It is important that we stay on top of what is being requested as it is the main way we can help influence our community in the way we would like it. Everyone gets their say, just make sure you use your voice and be heard, whatever your opinion. Also, respect others if they don't agree as that is all part of it.

**** UPDATE Jan 2024 **** Punch Taverns contested the rejection of their planning application and it was refused. This means - more or less - WE WON!

Much credit must go to the whole community for their combined attack on the proposals and their support for the pub. Our particular thanks must go to Mike for submitting repeated objections on behalf of CAMRA Rugby.

This does show the big companies don't always get what they want and objecting to planning applications can have the desired effect. It does take many objections from lots of people, but it is possible.
